Color Theory can make fashion so much more interesting and fun. There are in fact many types of color theory. There is the art school color theory with the color wheel and complimentary colors and analagous colors and all that.
But there is also the metaphysical view of color theory, like dressing to match your chakras or dressing in Kabbalistic colors.
Then there is the psychological school of thought where you dress in ways to heal yourself, like wearing bright yellow on an overcast day to improve your mood.
While it is nice to wear your favorite colors, it helps to start identifying your favorite color groups. For example, pick 3 colors that play well together in your own taste. Working with combos is very helpful when designing a new wardrobe. Some of my favorites are:
Pink with green and white.
Turquoise, hot pink and black.
Aqua, burnt orange, and chocolate brown.
Tangerine, turquoise, and burnt umber
Gray, black and royal blue.
Butterscotch, dark brown and lemon yellow.
Red, purple, and black.
Or you can dress yourself like your favorite flower, butterfly or food.
Wear the colors you see on dangling fuchsias, a monarch butterfly, or a mermaid in a lagoon.
Generally if your colors match in tone, you can wear a lot more of them together. Like all gem colors, or all pastels, or all muted colors. That's why red, white and blue or primary colors all play well together...they are all clear and bright.
Muted tones like olive, gold and rust look good together because they are all calmer colors.
Around Easter time everyone seems to be wearing pastels. Plan a shopping expedition where you look for just pastels, or just gem colors or just clear bright colors and see how it affects your choices.
Look at what you already wear. Do you go for the bright colors? Or is the brightest color you wear gray? Do the colors you are expected to wear to work clash with the colors that make you feel happy and free?
There is no right or wrong way to do color. It's all about confidence. If you can rock a fire engine red dress and heels, more power to you.
